Cactus Flowers

We have been amazed at how beautiful the blooms are on the various cacti around the area. We try to walk just before dusk when the heat begins to subside and we have hundreds of cacti to look at in many different stages of blooming. They are all different and gorgeous. How does such a stark and hostile plant come up with such beautiful flowers? Some bloom over a fairly long time period, others seem to have the blooms for only one day. We have had some very pleasant weather for about a week, highs in the 80s or low 90s. The temperatures are starting to creep up now into the 100s and we are getting the urge to travel.
