Changing of the guard at Rideau Hall

Rideau Hall - Offical residence of Canadian Governor General

In 1931 England granted her colonies dominion so they became peers of England. In 1867 the Confederation of Canada was created. In 1947, an independent Canadian citizenship was created. Whenever Canada became independent, she still shares the Monarch of England with several other independent nations. Queen Elizabeth II of England is also Queen Elizabeth II of Canada. Since Queen Elizabeth II resides in England, she has the Canadian Governor General as her official representative. The Governor General is appointed by the Queen on the advice of the Canadian Prime Minister and serves at the pleasure of the Queen, normally for a period of 5 years. By tradition, the Governor General alternates between a francophone and an anglophone, i.e., a French Canadian and an English Canadian. The duties of the Governor General are essentially those duties that the Queen herself would perform if she were in Ottawa.

Rideau Hall, located at 7 Rideau Gate in Ottawa is the official residence of the Governor General. When the Governor General is in residence, a special flag of a lion on a blue background is flown. When the Governor General is not in residence, the Canadian Maple Leaf flag is flown.

Sentries wearing the uniform of the Queens Guard are posted at Rideau Hall during the summer between the hours of 9:00 AM and 5:00 PM. The sentries are changed every hour. Although the sentries are ceremonial, they are militarily trained and can act as night guards if security threats to Rideau Hall exist. During changes, the fresh sentries march out accompanied by a bagpiper and a Corporal of the Guard. Two sentries are posted at the street entrance to Rideau Hall and two sentries are posted at the main entrance to the residence.

The official name of the new nation we love created in 1867 was and is the "Dominion of Canada", not the Confederation of Canada.
